Moray Speyside is a relatively small region tucked between the Highlands and Aberdeenshire in the northeast of Scotland. Famous for being ‘the malt whisky capital of the world’, thousands of people from around the globe come just to sample the famous Speyside single malts. But there's more to this region than just whisky!
Moray Speyside has a strong farming heritage thanks to its fertile soil and rolling landscapes. Many of the farms in this region are closely linked with the whisky industry, growing barley that will soon be malted and turned into the famous drink. Moray Speyside is also known for producing high-quality meats and being the birthplace of some famous foods and producers, including Cullen Skink, the digestive biscuit, Baxter's Soup, and Walker’s Shortbread. Incredibly, it’s said that Moray Speyside alone produces around a third of Scotland’s food and drink!
Agritourism has been growing in popularity recently, with several working farms in the region now offering accommodation and various experiences. A highlight is joining a whisky-based farm tour, which gives you the chance to trace the whisky-making process from its very beginning. You will then feel extra informed if you decide to visit a distillery afterward.
There are also plenty of farm shops to choose from, selling fresh produce from buffalo and goat meat to fruit and vegetables, along with fun experiences for the kids to enjoy.
